Everything You Need to Know About Visiting Burano, Italy

If you are going to Venice, you need to make the trip out to the island of Burano.  It’s a super cute and colorful island, known for lace-making.  It makes a really fun half day trip from Venice.  Here is what I recommend in terms of getting there and what to do.

Getting There

The most popular way to get to Burano is to take a ferry.  You will most likely be going from the Island of Venice.  You can catch the ferry on the north side of the Island.  You can find the terminal HERE.  You will be taking route 12.  You can just go to the counter and buy a round trip ticket for a day trip.  Then you go to the departure terminal.  Don’t forget to validate your ticket at the machine by the entrance.  I recommend waiting to validate until right before getting on the ferry because if you cannot get on that boat, your validation can expire.  I don’t remember the exact cost and when I look it up it says different amounts.  I believe it should be around 11-15 Euro round-trip.  You don’t have to decide in advance when you will be coming back.  You can just go to the same ferry station you arrived at and wait for the next ferry.

Be aware of ferry strikes.  There was a strike when I was there and they only left every two hours! They also prioritized locals so the boats filled up very quickly.  You can look it up online before you go.  If there is a strike you can take a private ferry to the island.  I didn’t need to do this but my sister did when she went.  I believe she told me they only accepted cash and the price may be more expensive.

Getting Around

The best and probably only way to get around is by foot.  The island is actually super small.  It only took about two hours to walk the whole island including taking photos and shopping.  You should plan on doing a lot of exploring.  There is so much to see and lots of colorful buildings and pretty canals.

Things to do

In terms of entertainment, the main thing to do it site-see.  Please be aware that these buildings are private residences and people do live there.  There are loads of boutiques to shop in.  There are a lot of lace shops and souvenir shops.  Burano is known for its lace making.  Check out the lace museum as well.  It was closed when I was there, sadly.  You can also eat at restaurants or get some gelato.  I didn’t eat any meals on the island because of the timing but we did get really amazing gelato.  We went to Gelateria Crema and it was some of the best that I had in Italy.  I mainly did a lot of shopping and took a lot of photos.
